Don Justo's cathedral in Mejorada del Campo (Madrid, Spain)
Wall paintings depicting biblical scenes from the New Testament on the main nave of Don Justo's Cathedral (Catedral de Don Justo).
Justo Gallego Martínez has worked in this building, mostly alone, since 1961, when he healed from tuberculosis and decided to offer a temple to Our Lady of the Pillar. Gallego Martínez, who has no formal training in architecture nor masonry, uses recycled everyday objects and discarded construction materials. A work in progress, the complex includes a crypt, cloisters, offices, lodgings, a library, and a dome. Don Justo, 85, has stated that the only plans for the cathedral are in his head. The building does not have formal building permits from the authorities nor the benediction or support of the Catholic Church.
